U.S. sets grants for health technology, job training

February 12th, 2010

Members of President Barack Obama’s Cabinet announced nearly $1 billion in grants on Friday to increase the use of health information technology, pushing a key component of Obama’s healthcare overhaul and job creation plans.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis announced nearly $1 billion in federal economic stimulus funds.

The money will be used to help make healthcare information technology available to over 100,000 hospitals and primary care physicians by 2014 and train thousands of people for careers in healthcare and information technology.

Sebelius announced more than $750 million in awards for states and healthcare providers.

Solis announced more than $225 million in Department of Labor grant awards that will be used to train 15,000 people in job skills needed to support careers in healthcare, information technology and other high growth fields.

The White House said grant recipients had identified about 10,000 openings for skilled workers likely to become available within the next two years.

Obama’s push to overhaul the $2.5 billion U.S. healthcare system has foundered since Democrats lost a crucial seat, and effective control, in the U.S. Senate in a special election in Massachusetts last month.

The White House has pivoted away from healthcare to focus on job creation since that vote, mindful that the country’s relatively high unemployment rate is a major concern for Americans. Friday’s announcement is one of a series on job creation.

Republicans, who are united in their opposition to Democrats’ reform plans, say they want Obama and his fellow Democrats to give up on bills reached last year after months of work, but the White House says it does not intend to do so.

Low Levels Of Natural Antibody Linked To Stroke Risk

February 12th, 2010

New research from Sweden reveals that a person’s chance of having a stroke is linked to low levels of a natural antibody in the immune system: the researchers hope to develop a vaccine that stimulates the immune system to boost levels of the antibody and thus increase the body’s own defences against arteriosclerosis and stroke.

The finding is the result of a study led by Professor Johan Frostegård at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, and you can read a report about it online in the 11 February issue of Stroke, a journal of the American Heart Association.

Arteriosclerosis is when plaque accumulate on the walls of blood vessels. It eventually bursts, causing a blood clot (thrombosis). It is a common cause of stroke (where a clot blocks blood flow in the brain), and myocardial infarctions or heart attacks.

Frostegård and colleagues had previously shown that high levels of a natural immunoglobulin M antibody known as anti-PC (anti-phosphorylcholine) are linked to slower progression of arteriosclerosis, and that low levels of anti-PC are associated with higher risk for cardiovascular disease.

For this study they concentrated on the link between anti-PC and stroke. They compared 227 first-time stroke patients (125 men and 102 women) with 445 controls matched by age and gender.

The subjects were part of population-based cohorts recruited between 1985 and 1999 to take part in the Västerbotten Intervention Project (VIP) and the World Health Organization Monitoring Trends and Determinants in Cardiovascular Disease (WHO MONICA) project in Northern Sweden.

Victoria Beckham’s Unique Fashion Test?

February 10th, 2010

Victoria Beckham has devised a unique fashion test according to which she will only design clothes that she herself would wear in real life. The former Spice Girl-turned-fashion designer admits she’s a perfectionist when it comes to her work so creates outfits she would be prepared to buy, Femalefirst reported. “The sales have been phenomenal. It’s been a challenge obviously people had preconceptions in the beginning but I’ve worked really really hard. The final test for me is, would I wear it myself?,” Victoria said.

The 35-year-old star, who is married to ace footballer David Beckham is keen to make all her designs high quality because creating fine clothing is something she’s always desired. “I just really love what I do and I’m passionate about it. It’s what I’ve also wanted to do and for me the quality is very important.” However, she has no immediate plans to launch a men’s range. “I think Tom Ford is doing an incredible job…but it’s not like I can’t wait to do a men’s line. I love women. I’m a real girl’s girl,” Victoria said.

Maran is now to Replicate the Success in the Fashion Industry

February 10th, 2010

After his success in attracting foreign direct investment in the telecom sector, textile minister Dayanidhi Maran is now to replicate the success in the fashion industry, especially textiles. His philosophy of “manufacture in India, sell in India and make money in India” had earlier attracted global telecom giants like Nokia, Motorola and Samsung during his stint as the telecom minister. Maran is now trying to attract global textile giants from the West using the same policy, but with an added point— “sell from India” by making India a regional hub for exports.

With foreign direct investment as its theme, Maran is leading a high-level business delegation to Germany and France on Tuesday. A similar delegation had earlier visited Italy, Switzerland and Turkey. Companies from these countries are in talks for either a green field or a joint venture investment with an Indian partner. Simultaneously, many global apparel & textiles companies have started sourcing higher volumes from India, sources in the textile ministry said.

“The comprehensive investment strategy of the minister is to convince large global textile and clothing brands to not only sell in the Indian domestic market, but also set up a manufacturing base for their global markets in India,’’ the sources said.

According to Maran, “in the crowded and mature market of textiles and international fashion, sustained and consistent efforts are required to attract foreign direct investment to India, leading to a greater integration of the Indian textile industry with the global textile manufacturing system. This deeper integration, together with international levels of excellence and global positioning, is likely to result in higher efficiencies and profitability. Such a strategy is critical to shielding the domestic industry from competition form low-cost producers like Bangladesh and Vietnam. The Centre is committed to such long-term efforts and ultimate success’’.

The Basics of Acne

February 3rd, 2010

Acne is a skin condition brought about by a host of factors that all contribute to its development. It starts off with an excess production of oil on the skin due to the over activity of body’s skin glands. The body’s hormonal havoc may lead to the plugging and clogging of the pores. When these oils interact with the dead skin cells that line up the pores and the dirt that accumulates from the environment, outbreaks may occur especially when bacteria begins to accumulate. Genetics play a role in acne. People whose family members have acne will most likely develop acne or have children who will develop the condition. The body’s internal hormonal system also contributes. This is the reason why teenagers are more predisposed to it than adults. Acne does not only occur on the face, although they are much visible there. Acne may crop up in different parts of the body but the most common is of course in the neck, at the back and on the shoulders.

There are five different types of acne, or one may also call them stages of acne. The first one is the most common form, acne vulgaris. This is actually the mild to moderate version of acne problem. Do not get be confused. If your only problem is some zits that you can count with your fingers then this is not your problem. Acne vulgaris involves all the works, whiteheads, blackheads, papules and pustules, which are quite visible as they often have a white or a yellow center. In severe cases of acne vulgaris, the person may
also experience the development of nodules and even cysts that are filled with pus. These are the forms of acne that when not treated carefully may lead to scarring.
